The Unhappiness Loop - staring at the computer

Your Lifestyle Has Already Been Designed (The Real Reason for the Fourty-Hour Work Week)

One of the reasons I started this blog was to help to open people’s eyes to the world around them. I came across an article the other day that helped me to do just that; so I thought I would share it with you! I have known for a while that the way America functions is not ideal for individual happiness, but I’ve never been able to see the working aspect of it so clearly as when I read an article entitled: Your Lifestyle has Already Been Designed (The real reason for the 40 hour work week). (Click the Picture to the right to read the article – I couldn’t recommend it enough!)

As the famous saying goes, in America we “live to work.” Unfortunately, we do not even notice many of the ways that this “live to work” mentality controls our lives. We work ourselves to death during the week because we feel like that is what we are supposed to be doing. But we are not noticing the way that it negatively effects us.

As the article states, the way our 40 hour work week is set up, basically controls our lives:

“We’ve been led into a culture that has been engineered to leave us tired, hungry for indulgence, willing to pay a lot for convenience and entertainment, and most importantly, vaguely dissatisfied with our lives…”

Reverse the Unhappiness Loop - A butterfly transformationBasically we live in a culture that leads us into a never-ending loop of unhappiness. I want to spread awareness about this issue because I believe if you are more aware of a problem
you are much more likely to not let it negatively effect your life.

With so many of us graduating high school and college, we are being faced with a lot of decisions. Decisions about what sort of jobs to take and how to live our lives. I am in no way discouraging a 9-5 job, because so many of them are wonderful and very fulfilling. I just believe it is important to understand everything that the “normal” job in our society entails. If you know what it entails, you can open your eyes and combat the negative effects.

I see the effect of the 9 to 5 jobs on the people around me, and I’ve felt them myself. (Restaurants… yay). You work yourself to death, you’re exhausted when you get home, and then you watch TV and eat horribly because you’re just so damn tired. And then on the weekend you feel like you have to let loose, spend your money, and party because you’ve been so trapped all week. And you never stop to think about why you might not be happy because you never even get a chance to stop and think about it. All other “non-thrilling” activities such as walking and reading are put aside because you feel like your time must be better spent.

We alternate between working and consuming and we forget to stop and think about what makes us happy. We lose touch with ourselves very quickly. And if New The Unhappiness Loop - New Equations Spiritual Postures with Siska ToveyEquations has taught me anything, losing touch with yourself, and your soul, is basically a recipe for disaster.

I have found the New Equations Music and the Spiritual Postures (click on the picture to the right) to be an incredibly effective way to combat the cycle of unhappiness. If you’re feeling low, try doing the postures, see what happens! And don’t forget, you never have to live like anybody else – do what you want to in the world, don’t let the way society functions effect your happiness. Do what you want and just be you!

Thanks for this Jenna… wow. So on Monday I played hooky and went kayaking with a friend up a very quiet river- no-one around just the hawks and the turtles and some fish. It was the most productive part of my week. Everything was slow and we simply took our time. Initially I felt a little guilty but quickly got over it:)
” And don’t forget, you never have to live like anybody else – do what you want to in the world, don’t let the way society functions effect your happiness. Do what you want and just be you!”

I came home calmer and very relaxed…. also definitely a more loving Mom. Thank you for this… Love it.
Of course I was also listening to the amazing New Equations music.

Thank you so much for sharing that Anita! That sounds like such a wonderful experience that you got to have =) Isn’t it great to be out in nature and be with the beauty of the earth!? I find it so refreshing after spending so much time inside staring at a computer screen. It makes me so happy that you were able to go out and do something you loved and feel the positive effects it had on you!

Thanks, Jenna. An enthralling and immensely important blog that will help people find the happiness that eludes them right now. You are speaking of happiness at a deep, lasting level – not something that happens because we choose to enjoy a gooey donut! Keep it coming!!! You are doing a magical job! LYNN

Wow, Jenna! Thank you so much for this post. So important and such a good thing to read this and been given the chance to change. You are pointing out so many things that is so useful to be with, and that working and consuming might not be the reason for us to be here on the earth :-). That we have choices to do something that is our own journey, not matter what we do. And I love this: ” Don`t let the way society functions effect your happiness” Well said! And I love the little butterfly and the quote that goes with it.
Thank you again for helping us wake up and start to make real choice. I look forward to your next post with wisdom, guidance and happiness :-)
