Having just graduated college with most of my life in front of me – I’ve found myself coming face to face with a lot of decisions. Some important – like where to invest my time, and others very minor – like what to wear in the morning. But recently, in the wake of all my decision making – I started to find myself lost and frustrated. At first I couldn’t figure out why – then as fate would have it – I stumbled across a video on YouTube and everything started to make sense. Elle Luna states so eloquently, without judgement or gimmicks – why so many of us are confused and unhappy. I never realized just how much of it was rooted in decision making. But not just any kind of decision making – but the decision between ‘should’ and ‘must.’ So many of us are living our life based on what we think we ‘should’ do, as opposed to what our heart tells us we ‘must’ do. Listen to her discuss the importance of how to make the decision to do what you love – it might just change your life – I know it changed mine.
After watching this, I realized I was making far too many of my decisions based on ‘should’ instead of ‘must.’ (This realization is especially important because the decisions you make in your 20s basically sets up the rest of your life – yikes). I realized I was wasting my time trying to conform to some ‘standards’ that I made up in my head based on what others might think – or based off of what I believed to be the norm in our society.
So now I ask you to think about your life. How many times in a week, or better yet – how many times during the course of just one day are you acting on ‘should’ instead of ‘must.’ I wanted to know how often I did this – so I started keeping track – taking a mental note whenever I would do something because I felt like I should, when I knew there was a ‘must’ that I was pushing aside. In just a few days I learned a lot about myself and I encourage you to do the same. This is a simple exercise – take note – and see what small changes you could make in your life that could dramatically increase your happiness. These changes will be small at first, but I believe that sooner rather than later a big ‘Should vs. Must’ moment will come along – and it’s up to you whether you want to jump off the cliff into that Must. You might just find yourself happier than you ever could have imaged. Don’t be afraid of your own happiness – it’s waiting for you.
If you simply don’t have time to watch the half hour long video, this is another one of her videos. It doesn’t cover nearly as much – but if you must then watch this one instead!
